• A simple, valid and measureable way to reduce the carbon impacts of your printed media and communications.

  • Carbon Balanced Paper: the carbon emissions associated with the raw material sourcing and production of a specified printing paper have been balanced (offset) through World Land Trust's Carbon Balanced Paper scheme.

Carbon Balanced Paper provides a credible solution for companies and organisations aiming to reduce the carbon impacts of their paper based communications.

The choice of a recycled/forest certified paper grade, in itself, can be recognised as an action to reduce your environmental impacts. However, the purchase of a Carbon Balanced Paper takes that a step further by also addressing the unavoidable carbon emissions associated with paper production.

Hence, Carbon Balanced Paper represents a further and measurable reduction of the carbon footprint of your printed media and communications.

  •
  • How it Works

You can carbon balance a business, an organisation, a service or a product on the basis that its carbon footprint can be measured.

The carbon footprint of a paper's raw materials and production is measurable. On average, the production carbon footprint of a European graphical paper grade is 616kgs CO2e per tonne of paper.

The carbon footprint figure, is balanced via World Land Trust's Carbon Balanced Paper scheme, which is an on-going land purchase and protection project of ecologically important standing forests under threat of clearance.

These protected areas then continue absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

Hence if 1 tonne of paper produces 616kgs of CO2e, then by increasing and protecting forestry that can absorb 616kgs of CO2e, Carbon Balancing is achieved.

  • The Benefits

In addition to your participation in the action against climate change, the benefits associated with Carbon Balanced Paper are as follows:

An independent Carbon Balanced Paper website to which you can direct your audience to

World Land Trust Carbon Balanced Paper logo for your printed media and communications

A World Land Trust certificate to endorse the amount of CO2e saved as well as the amount of High Conservation Value Land through your purchase of Carbon Balanced Paper

Good for CSR supporting an international Charity

Environmental reporting - the World Land Trust certificate can serve as an environmental record for ISO 14001 and carbon reporting

  • About World Land Trust

World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity which protects the world's most biologically important and threatened habitats acre by acre.

Since its foundation in 1989, WLT has funded partner organisations around the world to create reserves and give permanent protection to habitats and wildlife.

Its patrons include: Sir David Attenborough, Chris Packham, Steve Backshall and David Gower OBE.

  • World Land Trust's Mission

To protect and sustainably manage natural ecosystems of the world. To conserve their biodiversity, with emphasis on threatened habitats and endangered species.

To develop partnerships with local individuals, communities and organisations to engage support and commitment among the people who live in project areas.

To raise awareness, in the UK and elsewhere, of the need for conservation, to improve understanding and generate support through education, information and fundraising.

  • How Carbon Balancing Contributes to Conservation

Terrestrial habitats, such as forests, grasslands and wet peatlands, contain large volumes of carbon in their biomass and soils. However, these habitats are being destroyed or degraded at an unprecedented rate, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and contributing to between 10 and 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Carbon Balanced scheme offsets emissions by protecting threatened habitats that would otherwise have been lost, avoiding the release of stored carbon. This also enables the regeneration of degraded habitats, which gradually re-absorb atmospheric CO2. In a warmer climate it is predicted that tropical ecosystems will be able to store less carbon than they do now, so urgent action is required.

All Carbon Balanced projects are carefully designed according to robust standards that ensure offsets are delivered at a portfolio of sites where they are measurable, verifiable and properly monitored and can achieve high quality REDD outcomes (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation).

The current project for Carbon Balanced Paper is focused in Vietnam, protecting an important area of the Annamite Mountains rich in biodiversity. In addition to the carbon benefit, this activity protects many endangered wildlife species.
